The most American thing going on in this country this summer is soccer’s World Cup. Now don’t get your panties in a bunch; I appreciate the fact that the tournament is a world soccer event, and it’s not just being held in America. But when the Tartan Army landed in Boston, not only did they drink the town dry, they brought a party atmosphere like it was 1976 (I know, I remember 1976).
Then there’s the Europeans who found American college stadiums, baseball, flyovers, the national anthem, Philly cheesesteaks, Buc-ee’s, Walmart, Costco, and BBQ. You know they are all going home with the Freshman 15. And what’s with “Sweet Caroline” anyway?
I loved the intrepid who rented cars and thought it was a hop, skip, and a jump from New York to New Jersey and Boston and then “road trip” to Miami, Atlanta, Houston, and Kansas City, but wait, there’s more. Buckle up and head to the west coast, starting in Seattle, then Santa Clara, and Los Angeles—that leg alone is 1,800 miles. These folks complain about a 15-minute car trip on the continent but are renting trucks and motorhomes like a true American dad with a station wagon and four kids in the back.
Most amazing of all is their attitude, “Hey, what has the media been feeding us? We love America. America is not dead.” I have curated my social media feeds to land on all this stuff. Who needs to touch grass when you can watch these peeps. It’s lovely, like having toddlers again, big toddlers who marvel at everything.
So, sit back, relax, fire up the grill, and watch some fireworks. America is truly the land of the beautiful and the free. Sometimes it takes a visitor to let us know we have a stunning home.
Oh, and if you’re one of the authorities in Miami who thinks coning statues is a huge issue, you must have a fabulously low crime rate.
